The role of a counselor:

Mrs. A. is trained in everything from supporting academics to suicide prevention.  She is accessible for just about any question or concern.  She works as a teammate with all teachers and support staff and is available for parent consultation and support.  Her role in the school is to help in ensuring success for each and every student.

Students in need of additional support in academics, personal/social and life skills are referred to the counselor.  These students receive support within the classroom, in one-to-one counseling sessions and as part of groups.  Counseling groups and individual sessions are confidential, this means that the counselor will not share information regarding your child with anyone other than you; the parent.  In the case that students make statements regarding being hurt or hurting themselves or others you and/or the proper authorities will be notified.

The counselor is also a mandated reporter.  She is responsible for the safety of our students and will act according to the law in the case of necessity.  If you have any concerns regarding your child or another student feel free to contact her for consultation and support.

Accountability

The counselor is as accountable as the teachers for our student's education.  Data collection through surveys and reporting is done on a regular basis.

The counselor pushes in or pulls students to teach lessons that focus on three specific areas as designated by the American School Counseling Association:  Academic, Personal/Social and Career (or life skills at the Elementary level).  At Zephyr Cove, each grade is taught twice each month throughout the year.  Mrs. A.'s lessons are active, relevant and entertaining.  The students are encouraged to participate through a variety of ways including physical activities, deep thought, creativity and verbal participation.

Each year, the students are surveyed to evaluate what they can do, what they remember and what they would like to know.  At times, the parents and teachers in our school community are also surveyed.  Adult and student survey data will be shared below.

Events and Activites Mrs. A. is a part of:

Caught In The Act
Why? To help our students learn that we are all supposed to follow the rules and be our best, however, the best behaviors are the ones that go above and beyond what is expected.
When does this take place?  Throughout the school year teachers hand out "Caught In The Act" slips to students.  Every student who receives a slip has their name put in a jar.  On a bi-weekly or so basis, names are pulled out of the jar and students are recognized as the "star student."  Every month, the class with the most "Caught In The Acts" is rewarded and spotlighted.

Red Ribbon Week
Why? This week long event includes daily activies and themes as well as a climbing wall to close out the week.  It is designed to bring awareness to making healthy choices and drug prevention.
When does this take place?  Typically during the week before Halloween/Nevada Day

Mix It Up At School Lunch Day
Why? Mix It Up is a national campaign to improve intergroup relations, reduce prejudice and build inclusive learning communities.  Students thrive—socially and academically—in schools that are inclusive. Mix It Up encourages students to identify, question and cross social boundaries that separate them from other students.
When does this take place? Every October.  Volunteers and creative ideas are welcome.

Student Council
Why?  To help promote school spirit, teach responsibility and teamwork.  Every student in grades 3-6 are invited to run for a council position.  The council then supports school initiatives, encourages students to participate in activities and helps to create school spirit through "spitit days."  Fundraisers throughout the year raise money that is donated back to the school to be used toward improvements.
When?  Elections are typically help in October/November.  Student council meets twice a month through the year.

The Giving Tree
Why?  To create community awareness and offer members in the community to support one another.  Each year, families are asked if they are in need of some help with holiday gifting.  Students in these families request gifts and are anonymously chosed my community members.  The anonymous gift donors bring in unwrapped gifts and the student council along with other volunteers work together to wrap the gifts.
When?  Request forms are distributed in November.  The tree is "decorated" after Thanksgiving break and gifts are distributed the Friday before the winter break.

Pennies For Patients
Why?  To help students recognize the importance of supporting a cause bigger than they are and to bring awareness of disabilities and the importance of supporting others and accepting differences.  Students donate pennies in an effort to raise money to support research and awareness of Lukemia and Lymphoma.
When?
A two-three week period during February and March.

Moving Up Ceremony
Why?  To create a "right of passage" for our students as they move forward in their academic careers and lives.  Ceremonies and traditions help to create enthusiasm and awareness of the importance of the various stages in our lives.  Rights of passage designate change and help bring awareness to our own growth and achievements.  The Moving Up includes a performance by the entire school and a symbolic flag ceremony.
When?
At the end of the school year during our awards ceremony.

The Student Council would like to say
"Thank You."
